New Crab Named for ‘Harry Potter’ Characters
A new type of crab has been identified off the coast of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean. The critter named Harryplax severus, is a nod to Harry Conley, the researcher who first found the crab, The Boy Who Lived and Severus Snape from ‘Harry Potter’.
The creature was originally unearthed by Harry Conley 20 years ago, however, he was unaware of its significance. Conley died tragically in 2002 and his research was eventually passed onto Peter Ng, a biologist at the National University of Singapore. Ng co-authored the study with his colleague, Dr. Jose Christopher E. Mendoza.
Mendoza, a self-proclaimed “Potterhead”, jumped at the chance to name the creature after his favorite ‘Harry Potter’ characters, Harry Potter himself and Severus Snape. The name Severus was chosen because “it is also an allusion to a notorious and misunderstood character in the Harry Potter novels, Professor Severus Snape, for his ability to keep one of the most important secrets in the story, just like the present new species which has eluded discovery until now, nearly 20 years after it was first collected.”
