New Spider Named After ‘Harry Potter’ Sorting Hat

Scientist in India discovered a new species of spider. Yes, Ron, more spiders! The triangle-shaped body of the spider inspired scientists to name it after the magical sorting hat from the ‘Harry Potter’ films. The spider has been named Eriovixia gryffindori, which is a nod to the hats original owner, Hogwarts founder, Godric Gryffindor. The full report can be found by following this link

In response to the naming, author JK Rowling tweeted that she is “truly honoured.” harry potter, sorting hat, jk rowling, wizarding week in review

Rare Handwritten ‘Tales of Beedle the Bard’ Sells for £370,000

A bejewelled copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard sold at auction for over £370,000 on December 13.

JK Rowling created seven copies, six were gifted to “those most closely connected to the Harry Potter books” and one specifically for auction (that copy brought £1.95m in 2007).

The copy sold by Sotheby’s in London, was owned by Barry Cunningham, the publisher who first signed Rowling.

The book is leather-bound in brown morocco leather embellished with semi-precious stones and mounted with a silver skull. Not only is the book completely handwritten by Rowling, it also contains her illustrations as well as an inscription to Cunningham that read “To Barry, the man who thought an overlong novel about a boy wizard in glasses might just sell … THANK YOU.”

Cunningham received Rowling’s approval to sell the book and will donate some of the auction profits to her charity, Lumos.harry potter, sorting hat, jk rowling, wizarding week in review, tales of beedle the bard
