When you first think of our beloved series, I’m willing to bet that one of the first three adjectives that come to mind is not ‘funny.’ The series, both the movies and the books, have their fair share of funny moments and today, I’m sharing my favorites. This is not an extensive list by any means; what Harry Potter moment makes you laugh the hardest? Describe your favorite funny moment in the comments!
Ballooning Aunt Marge
While a most unpleasant character, there sure was something satisfyingly hilarious about watching her turn into a human balloon. For whatever reason, I find the book’s description to be a bit funnier and borderline gross. Fudge’s comment about not sending underage wizards to Azkaban for blowing up their aunts is the icing on the cake. Nonetheless, watching anyone turn into a balloon and float away would have me on the floor hysterically laughing.
McGonagall vs. Umbridge
Hear me out on this. The movies touch on the tensions between the two strong female characters in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie, but for a full look at the hilarious, sassy interactions I would turn to the book. In the movie, we see one, serious showdown between these two ladies on the staircase outside of The Great Hall. The book features more interactions similar to this iconic one and McGonagall is dishing out serioussass. These small and hilarious jabs at Umbridge create a pretty hilarious relationship between the two. What do you think?
Malfoy as a Ferret
Another iconic scene from a Potter movie, Mad Eye Moody transfiguring Malfoy into a ferret makes me chuckle every time. Most interactions between Potter and Malfoy are a combination of cringe-inducing insults and defensive comments. This one is a complete 180 from those interactions and is actually funny, especially when you consider the larger context of their interaction: Malfoy insults Harry; Harry gets angry and says he doesn’t care what Malfoy thinks; then BAM, Moody comes out of nowhere and turns Malfoy into a ferret. Comedic gold.
Mr. Weasley & Muggle Curiosity
While Mr. Weasley’s curiosity about Muggles is never far behind in many scenes throughout the series, one instance in particular cracks me up every time. “So what exactly is the function of a rubber duck?”The silliness and innocence of this question make me giggle. Especially when one considers that rubber ducks are just a bath toy for children. I’m also left with a lot of follow-up questions for Mr. Weasley: Where and when did he see a rubber duck? What does he think it does?
Neville’s boggart turning into Professor Snape
Harry’s “wet” kiss with Cho
Dumbledore likes Muggle knitting patterns
When Hagrid’s place was “the place to be tonight”
